TEC Sidemount & Instructor Trainer Course with Jeff Loflin

Tanks, ready for class

It were a special few days, these last few. Undisputed top technical Dive Instructor: Jeff Loflin was flown in by Michel Wouterse, to come teach Recreational Sidemount, Technical Sidemount and Technical Sidemount Instructor/Trainer courses. Thursday it all began. we had an orientation and were already prepped by watching the video and doing knowledge reviews on the subject. Also, we had already spent a day and a half prepping our tanks and other materials.

Of course this saved us a lot of time, although it became very clear very quickly that we had several things yet to learn. After the reasoning and discussions in the classroom, it was time for some action. We put our stuff in the van and drove up to the pool at Merlin Road. 4 divers, 8 tanks. We practised don/dof, hover, flutter/frog, backwards kicking, helicopter turns, maintain position, gas sharing, gas shut down drills, extend forward a tank, extend forward both tanks. Several of these skills filled up my mask as they look so weird when you do them wrong but are trying so hard. I had already taken my TEC course with Jeff in 2006, in Utila and of course taught a couple in the last few years, but even I proved to be able to make a fool of myself during the helicopter turn once or twice. :)

With me in the course were my friend and CDC DiveMaster Marc Arnold and our mutual friend Tadzio Bervoets from the St. Maarten Nature Foundation and we took turns to practise our skills as the pool is a bit too smal to do everything at the same time with eachother. Unbelievable how cold a pool gets after a few hours underwater!!

Jeff Loflin is telling us to hover

Hovering with sidemount tanks is a little different from backmounted. But it proves easier!!

The next day it was open water time. So we took the boat to little bay. After a good briefing, we prepped our ropes and lowered our tanks in the water. Backward roll in and clipping off the tanks… away we went. Due to our extensive time in the swimming pool, we did not have to climb back on the boat to correct all sorts of things, so we could go straigth into our skills and swims. Very nice.

Those tanks are quite heavy on land…

After completing the recreational part of this extended course, it was time for the second half…. the TEC part. Again we were back in the classroom, again we went over our rigs. This time of course we had to add DECO tanks. And again, Jeff Loflin, shared his extensive experience with us. We did some dry training this time. Certain skils, like broken regs on the tank you need and such, where you have to swap regulators, you do not really want to train in-water as this would be flooding regulators. Flooding a regulator of course means you have to rebuild them, which is something you do not want to do every day of training.

NOTOX – Way to go!

After the land drills being a success it was time for in water action. In Little bay, we got to practice with our regular sidemount kit, but now adding a single left tank, then adding a single right tank, then adding both tanks. We again practiced Notox, again went thru all safety and movement drills. We practised staging and clipping off deco tanks, etc. Lot’s of fun that I get to repeat with Marc and Tadzio when they are in there PADI TEC Deep Course, a few weeks from now. Of course we also swam around just for fun and to enjoy the stability 4 tanks offer when clipped sidemount.

The last adventure was for myself. I still had to do the instructor part of the class of course. Jeff had me demonstrate all skills we practised in the days before followed by Tadzio and Marc being my students for me to correct any mistakes they might make. Ha! That’s funny. For a brief period I felt I was in my IDC all over again and not as a Course Director either. But it went very well. My previous TEC course with Jeff and the experience, all be it moderate, served me well and resulted in getting compliments for my demonstrations and I even cought a few things, like someone not switching to necklace before NOTOX and.. well that’s a pretty important one, of course.
The day after, I finished with a morning session discussing various presentations and marketing tips and tricks and that was it…. a wonderful week, a great course and… I am actually a bit sad it is over. CAN’T WAIT for my Cave Diving Course…. with JL, No doubt!

From now on available with Caribbean Dive College (Michel) – All Regular, Pro and TEC courses in sidemount (except IDC) – Are you curious?

September 2012 Sunday Funday with Caribbean Dive College

Returning to Sint Maarten from a three week vacation in the USA I was lucky enough to be on time for another Sunday Funday. This event which takes place every last Sunday of the month is one of the special treads the Caribbean Dive College offers to local and visiting certified divers. On the menu are; reduced rates for a two tank dive trip, visiting special more remote dive sites, BBQ on the beach, plenty of (exotic) drinks, good music, great Caribbean ambiance and the renowned Sint Maarten friendly island happy faces.

For this occasion we deviated a little bit from the regular menu which is always good to do every now and then. Of course the diving was on there, but food this time was provided for by 12 metres restaurant who did a great job on that. The exotic drink this time didn‘t earn its name from its origin (Holland), but more so from its composition: vodka with a mineral named ammonium chloride dissolved in it. Commonly this rare mineral plays a role in the refining of precious metals like borax, silver and gold. NH4Cl is also used as a flux in the soldering of stained-glass windows. In Europe this stuff is named salmiak and there it finds its way into cookies and candy. Anyway, the bottle was empty before it touched the table and left memories that will last. Thanks to Trevor for the generous donation of this special drink! Let´s go into the diving earlier this Sunday!

The normally very reliable windguru.cz website predicted a calm ocean so at 10.00 AM we set sail to the small rock islands known as hen and chicks. Due to a passing thunderstorm the ride out there turned out to be wilder than anticipated. Nothing our old but trustworthy boat Peter Pan and captain Mich can´t handle though and the group of some 12 divers was delivered safely to this great dive site. Knowing this site is very rich in coral diversity and other marine life, everybody was geared up and ready to enter the 30C 86F water in no time. After entering the water I immediately noticed the high water temperature. Bad news for our reefs! Let´s hope for some colder currents coming our direction before real damage is done. This will also scare potential passing hurricanes away from the island. After these short thoughts we went down in smaller groups led by Abbey and Hillarey. Trevor navigated both groups to the crater. This not so easy to find place got its name from the volcanic crater like shape. The feeling dropping down from the edge into this relatively deep and dark hole is so special. On our way down we encountered a big school of juvenile fish under the overhanging edge of the crater. Half way I looked up to see a group of medium size tarpons (3 to 4 ft long) that was keeping an eye on us from the surface. This was the second time that I saw a group of tarpons at this dive site and that makes me very excited about this place. In the crater we found a cute baby drum fish which is always worth mentioning. We left the crater thru a narrow canyon on the other site to do some more exploration of the reef. Coming out of that canyon and overseeing the colors of the reef and the fishes, I had to remind myself to keep tension on my mandible. Not actively thinking about that makes my jawbone drop down and my regulator swim away from me! It´s just so beautiful out there. Unfortunately the thunderstorm that was harassing captain Mich on board the Peter Pan casted its shadow over the already dark crater so I left my camera unused on this dive. After 55 minutes Abbey and Hillarey launched their surface marker buoys and after our safety stop we ended a great first dive.

For the second dive of this funday we did a drift towards a site called the Maze. Mich found somebody (again thank you Trevor) to guard the boat and supervise from above so he could join in for this one. Mich geared up in a way to small BCD and had to improvise with fins but he made it work. Even after thousands of scuba dives he is still very enthusiastic to do one more.

Shortly after reaching the bottom Mich decided that diving a to small BCD provides the perfect opportunity to experiment with sidemount diving. This kind of configuration is growing in popularity in the TEC and cave community. He gave it a try and actually made it look like this regular BCD was designed for sidemount purposes.

Half way thru this second dive we found ourselves surrounded by the big stuff. Two curious reef sharks were circling us at ever smaller distance. We decided to stick to that spot to offer the sharks a chance to explore divers even more up-close which they slowly and prudently did.

At the end of our 10 minute playing time with the reef sharks, additionally two nurse sharks joint the party. That’s two times two sharks, Mich and myself! Sharks are very friendly and beautiful company. We were able to take close up pictures and continued to explore more reef before ending yet another great day of diving the reefs of Sint Maarten.

We badly need to do a better job to protect these impressive predators. They are of vital importance to the ecosystem of the reefs. Although we encounter sharks on many of our dives, also on Sint Maarten sharks get killed (see archive in this blog).

If you were not there this time, make sure you don´t miss the next opportunity to join a Sunday funday at CDC.

Ongoing September IDC – Caribbean Dive College

The fun has really begon. The boys and girl in the Caribbean Dive College IDC in St. Maarten have passed their first confined water presentation today with great results! All results between 3.8 and 4.4…. how about that!!
After this we had fun in the DSD workshop and of course Michel and Paul had fun while looking at the candidates doing their 800 meter snorkeling.

Even Little Bay sometimes offers great photo oppertunities…..

O well, Little Bay can be quite a treat and although I did not find the specific creature I was looking for, (the one Abberz somehow spotted yesterday) I have attached a picture summarising the feeling I got exploring a little.

I had accidently left my flashes turned on overnight, so wasn’t able to use those, but with my Wide Angle lens I was able to make this a decent picture.

More on the IDC and the “creature hunt” follows shortly :)

Weather like we’re in the UK

It’s incredible. It has been grey and raining non-stop since last night. This is technically one of those days one needs to stay home, in bed, watching TV.
But… it is what it is. It is still the tropics and so we’re open. Things like website maintenance, billboard refreshing, maintenance etcetera, is all stuff that is perfect for days like this.
Hence – Nobody in the water… we’re all in the office or gear room.

What is the weather like?

Like we’re in the UK!

Two brand New PADI Instructors “delivered”

PADI Instructors Hillarey and Erin

It’s done! Both girls are PADI instructor now!

We are the proud “parents” of two brand new PADI instructors. Although a combined delivery of approximately 220lbs is quite a challenge, I am happy to announce CDC and the instructor twins, as well as the Course Director and IDC staff are all doing fine.
There will be oppertunity to congratulate all starting this afternoon at the 12 metres bar. It is yet unknown till what time we will be ready to receive your drinks in honor of this accomplishment. We start as soon as the twins are finally home :)

Additionally keep your eyes out for the announcement of the snorkel test event, which will soon have to take place with 4 testers.
